Back through the centuries

It is clear, even to a casual observer, that Townsend House is a building of some antiquity.

A book Townsend House- a brief history is available at the house or Tourist Information Board. £2. It traces the story of the house through its numerous occupants and owners. It was possible to confirm the occupants at the following dates:

Going back still further, it is possible that there is a reference to Townsend House from 1457. The baliff of the manor records a payment of 6/8d from Alice, daughter of John Cockes, villein* of the lord, who lived "atte Townsyend".

* villein n. in medieval Europe, a peasant personally bound to his lord, to whom he paid dues and services in return for his land
